What is "learning through play"?
Learning through play is a philosophy based on current research that proves that children in their early years learn best through play-based environments. Play provides essential opportunities for children to explore, experiment and learn.
Through play in a safe, creative environment children become skilled in using their bodies effectively; satisfying their curiosities; expressing self-confidence and independence; getting along with others; coping with their feelings; solving problems; expressing themselves; and feeling good about themselves.
At Inglewood PPP we provide children with opportunities to explore and challenge their capabilities in all four areas of development: physical, social, emotional and intellectual. Nurturing self-esteem and establishing social skills are an integral part of this philosophy.
What are the requirements of Parent Participation Preschools?
- Parents participate as "duty" parents in the classroom an average of two times per month (another caregiver such as a nanny or grandparent may act for the parent)
- Attend monthly general meetings where preschool business is discussed and parent education sessions are conducted, with the opportunity to hear professional speakers on a variety of parenting topics. This is also a time to socialize and share information and experiences with other parents.
- Take on a "job" role at the preschool - various jobs with varying levels of commitment are available (e.g., Membership, Public Relations, Special Events, etc.)
- Volunteer for one "community event" (Preschool Fair or Community Day) , one "special event" (Christmas, Easter or June BBa) and one "group clean up" event (Nov, Feb or April) for the school year
- Participate in fundraising activities, as and when required
What are the benefits of Parent Participation Preschools?
- Provides parents with a quality educational experience for their preschool children
- Provides parents with the opportunity to increase their parenting skills and share information and experiences about child rearing with other like-minded parents
- Provides free monthly parenting seminars
- More affordable than privately owned schools
- Parents are directly involved with their child's first preschool experience by directly participating in the classroom as well as in the administration of the school
- Provides a high adult/child ratio (1-5 for 3 year olds, 1-6 for 4 year olds), with children ranging in age from 32 months to 5 years old
How often do parents do duty?
Parents assist the teacher about twice per month (another caregiver such as a nanny or grandparent may act for the parent).
What if I have a younger child?
Younger siblings are not permitted in the classroom while you are on duty - this is a licensing regulation. A duty day is a special time for you and your preschooler. Since many other PPP parents are in the same position, parents often find it easy to exchange babysitting on duty days.
What are your days and hours?
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9:15-11:45 am (3's) and 12:45-3:15 (4's)
What are the fees?
The fees for 2007-2008 are $160/month + a $75 annual registration fee. For budgeting purposes, fees are 10 equal payments regardless of the number of preschool sessions.
Does my child need to by potty-trained by September?
No, it is not essential.
Helping at the school, you'll meet other parents, get to know the other children and, best of all, be directly involved in the early education of your child.
